Cécile Sabourin

I am an economist and a retired professor of the University of Quebec in Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT).

From the fall of 2003 until the moment when the FPH made the decision to modify its priorities I coordinated the committee working on the dissemination of the Charter of Human Responsibilities in Quebec and in Canada. In this context, I participated in various initiatives including setting up, in collaboration with Fabienne Preséntey, the Respoinfo.org Web site on human responsibilities. The Web site has remained active in spite of the new priorities.

I facilitated the Workshop Women and the Economy of the Workgroup on Solidarity Socio Economy of the Alliance for a Responsible, Plural and United World from 1999 to 2003, an initiative supported by the FPH. This activity, complementary to my academic work, made it possible to combine research interests with a process of theorizing and to emphasize alternative economic practices. In the field of the economy, I am currently participating in the Collective “Économie autrement” (economy differently).

I finished in 2009 a 5-year term as chairwoman of the Quebec Federation of University Professors (FQPPU), a union group with responsibilities of a political order mainly in the field of higher education. This function allowed me to deepen my knowledge and thinking on the subject, and to register among the concerns of the FQPPU, the roles and responsibilities of professors and of universities in society. As chairwoman of the FQPPU, I contributed to the emergence of the Quebec Science and Democracy Committee and I am participating in the International Initiative Committee that is facilitating this approach at the international level and preparing the second Sciences and Democracy World Forum that will be held in Dakar (Senegal) on February 4 and 5, 2010. This involvement is linked to my participation in the Ethics and Responsibility of Scientists and Academic Circles project.
